The Pentateuch: A Demonstration of God’s Faithfulness and Desire for Covenant Relationship

Source: Wikipedia Commons Introduction The Pentateuch, also known as the Torah, is a word that is commonly applied to the first 5 books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The word Pentateuch means "five scrolls" and was used by the Hellenized Jews in the first century AD, whereas Torah is used by the Hebrew speaking Jewish community and means "'instruction' in holiness."[1] In this paper, I will first look at the interpretive conventions necessary for proper hermeneutics of the Pentateuch. Secondly, I will explore the general themes and structure of the Pentateuch as a whole.
